Samen met haar echtgenoot reist de auteur door Ghana. Een land met historische banden met Nederland. Eeuwen geleden zijn miljoenen Afrikanen als slaven verscheept, via één van de vele Hollandse slavenforten aan de kust, naar onder andere Amerika en Suriname. Cape Coast en Elmina zijn dé plekken waar deze forten goed te bezoeken zijn. Op het Hollandse kerkhof in Elmina zijn nog steeds de namen te lezen op de graven van de Hollanders die hun verblijf in de tropen niet hebben overleefd.
Na een bezoek aan deze forten ging het richting het Kakum Park waar werd gewandeld over de toppen van de bomen. Grote touwbruggen zweven veertig meter boven de grond en geven de reiziger een unieke kijk op dit tropische regenwoud.
Via Kumasi, het hart van het Ashanti rijk, werd een bezoek gebracht aan Hand in Hand (PCC) in Nkoranza. Een bijzonder project in Ghana waar kinderen met een verstandelijke beperking liefdevol worden verzorgd. In Boabeng-Fiema werden de heilige apen bezocht en met verbazing op het apenkerkhof rondgelopen. In het Mole Park werd genoten van de olifanten én het zwembad. De oude moddermoskee van Larabanga werd bewonderd en met de bus ging de reis verder naar het Noorden. Naar Tamale, Bolgatanga om te eindigen in Sirigu. Een dorpje bekend om zijn fraaie muurdecoraties en stoere vrouwen die voor hun eigen inkomen zorgen. Menig uurtje werd doorgebracht in trotro's, wachtend op de juiste busverbinding en kijkend naar een wereld waar de dingen vaak zo anders verlopen dan in Nederland én soms weer zo herkenbaar zijn.
