In 1979 vond op het kleine Caraïbische eiland Grenada, ooit het decor van de Hollywoodfilm Island in the Sun (1957), een revolutie plaats. Na een jarenlange dictatuur trad de charismatische premier Maurice Bishop aan. Nadat hij hulp van Cuba accepteerde bij de bouw van een vliegveld, beschouwde Amerika hem direct als staatsvijandelijk.
In Nederland verzamelde zich een groep journalisten, politici en wetenschappers, waarvan in 1983 een afvaardiging naar het eiland vertrok om poolshoogte te nemen. Onder hen bevond zich Coot van Doesburgh. Nadat ze eenmaal voet op Grenadiaanse bodem had gezet, vatte ze een intense fascinatie voor het eiland op, vooral ook voor de bevolking ervan, en keerde ze er regelmatig terug. Eind 1983 zou Bishop worden gefusilleerd door linkse extremisten, waarna de Verenigde Staten het eiland binnenvielen.
