Samen proberen zij een leven op te bouwen in Nederland, maar dat blijkt niet eenvoudig en zodra Mirjam haar droombaan in Kenia vindt, keren zij terug naar Afrika. Ze kopen een stuk land buiten Nairobi, en krijgen twee kinderen. Als de relatie tussen Mirjam en Njenga steeds moeizamer wordt en haar werkcontract in 1998 afloopt, keert Mirjam met grote tegenzin terug naar Nederland, waar ze met haar kinderen een nieuw leven opbouwt. Ieder jaar keren ze met kerst terug naar Kenia om hun familie te bezoeken. Wanneer tijdens de onlusten in december 2007 blijkt dat haar kinderen niet langer als Kenianen worden gezien, maar als Kikuyu's wordt haar vertrouwen in het land op de proef gesteld.
