Äthiopien ist mit über 90 Ethnien ein Vielvölkerstaat. Amtssprache ist Amharisch, die Sprache der Amharen, die das Land jahrhundertelang beherrscht haben. Amharisch ist die offizielle Amtssprache Aethiopiens. Gegenüber anderen Ländern Afrikas, in denen sich bis heute europaeische Sprachen als Amtssprachen durchgesetzt haben, stellt Aethiopien neben Tansania in dieser Hinsicht eine Ausnahme dar. Gerade deshalb ist es sinnvoll, wenigstens ansatzweise die Landessprache zu lernen, wenn man das Land bereisen will. Wie in den meisten Großstaedten kommt man zwar auch in groesseren Orten Aethiopiens mit Englisch gut zurecht, auf dem Land jedoch wird sich die Kommunikation oft auf Amharisch beschraenken. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass ein paar Brocken der Landessprache einen ganz anderen Einstieg in die uns fremde Kultur ermöglichen und sich beispielsweise beim Handeln ungeahnte Moeglichkeiten bieten!
Den Zugang zu Land und Leuten zu erleichtern ist das Ziel dieses Sprechfuehrers. Nicht eine hundertprozentige Beherrschung der Grammatik steht hierbei im Vordergrund, sondern eine erste Hinfuehrung an die Sprache. Als je in Addis Abeba over de Djiboutisch-Ethiopische spoorlijn begint, moet je rekenen op een spottende glimlach of zelfs een schrikreactie. Toch beslaat het tracé van de enkelspoorlijn maar 782 zielige kilometertjes, maar ze gaan wel over hoogvlakten, door gebergten en woestijnen en de reiziger loopt het risico aangevallen te worden door guerillastrijders of rovers. De baan van de trein loopt grotendeels door een geheimzinnige streek die lang ontoegankelijk is geweest. Desondanks moet deze 'trein van de negus', zo genoemd omdat negus Menelik hem ooit bij de Fransen bestelde, elke dag het traject Addis Abeba - Djibouti afleggen. De auteur ontmoet tijdens zijn reis mensen die een leven leiden waarvan men zou denken dat het niet meer bestaat.

In 1982 bezoekt Philip Marsden voor het eerst Ethiopië. Hij raakt onder de indruk van de restanten uit de Oudheid, haar ongepolijste middeleeuwse christendom en de combinatie van wreedheid en gratie. Hij ontmoet monniken en kluizenaars, rebellen, boeren en gelovigen die alle materiële zittingen hebben afgezworen. Marsden schetst een onvergetelijk beeld van een van de meest desolate plekken ter wereld, en verkent de tweeslachtigheid van een land dat erg trots is op zijn onafhankelijkheid, maar er ook door gehinderd wordt.
