* De Westelijke Sahara is bezet door Marokko, onderhandelingen met de Verenigde Naties en Polisario over een (gedeeltelijke) zelfstandigheid zijn al jaren gaande.
** Somaliland heeft zich in 1991 tot zelfstandige republiek uitgeroepen. Het land functioneert goed, het is er relatief veilig, maar Somaliland is tot nu toe door geen enkel ander land als zelfstandige republiek erkend. Reden hiervoor is dat erkenning van Somaliland als zelfstandig land er waarschijnlijk toe zal leiden, dat vele andere deelgebieden in Afrika zich ook zullen willen afscheiden van het land waartoe ze nu behoren. De Organisatie van Afrikaanse Eenheid heeft ooit gesteld, dat de huidige grenzen binnen Afrika definitief zijn.
In Afrika zijn 53 landen lid van de Verenigde Naties, meer dan in enig ander werelddeel. Ter vergelijking: Europa telt 46 lidstaten, Azië 44 en Noord-, Midden- en Zuid-Amerika samen 35. (bron: Verenigde Naties)
Bevolking: Afrika heeft ongeveer 900 miljoen inwoners (14% van de wereldbevolking).
Oppervlakte: circa 30.293.000 km² .
Hoogste punt: Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania 5895m; laagste punt: Lake Assal, Djibouti -156m.
Woestijnen: De Sahara is met circa 8.600.000 km² de grootste woestijn op aarde. Andere Afrikaanse woestijnen zijn de Kalahari in Botswana met 260.000 km² , de Nubische woestijn in Sudan met 265.000 km² en de Namibwoestijn (134.000 km²).
Klimaat: Afrika heeft ook de plek met de hoogste gemiddelde jaartemperatuur: Dallol in Ethiopië met 34,4ºC. In Libye is bij het dorp Alaziziyah op 13 september 1922 de hoogste temperatuur in de schaduw gemeten: 58ºC.

Die 3. Auflage 1994 war die letzte Auflage, in der das Westafrika-Reisehandbuch noch als ein einzelnes Buch erschienen ist. Der von Auflage zu Auflage stetig wachsende Umfang des Buches (zuletzt fast 1000 Seiten) hat es mit der 4. This map is unique in that it does what as far as we know has not been attempted before by any publisher – portraying the entire Mediterranean coastline from Morocco to the eastern edge of Egypt in one double-sided map. Admittedly, current political realities make this map somewhat challenging. One cannot cross, for example, between Morocco and Algeria, and Libya is in such a state of disarray at the moment that it is not practical to visit the country. However, the strength of this title is that it breaks new ground and looks at the countries north of Sahara as a comprehensive entity in great detail.
